Therapists for college students near 02138
In my counseling work I provide psychotherapy for children, adolescents, adults, couples, families and groups. My clients include people struggling with PTSD, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. My relational and existential approach helps me understand and connect with my clients. I believe that the intent of therapy is exchanging "symptoms" for "coping skills." To accomplish this transformation, we need to understand our past to shed light on who we are in the present, where we have the power to focus on present issues and make changes that will influence our future. I see psychotherapy as a learning process. I bring my knowledge and understanding of psychological phenomena to bear on my client's life experiences. Psychotherapy is not an easy process, but I work to meet you, the client, where you are and to create safe space to explore and grow. In addition to psychotherapy work, I'm an adjunct faculty at Lesley University, where I teach Introduction to Psychology and Child Psychology. I have completed my psychoanalysis fellowship with the IPE, which is affiliated with the New York University School of Medicine. I'm also a certified Cognitive Behavioral group therapist.
Everyone, at least once in their life, finds themselves struggling with life events that feel insurmountable or with emotions that feel outside of their control. I believe that therapy can help with that and bring out your own resilience and capacity to learn. My guiding principle is to provide an open and accepting environment where people can explore their personal experiences and reinforce their well-being. I view therapy as a collaborative process and use acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to emphasize mindfulness and self-awareness. Working together, we can identify barriers to success, maladaptive responses and strategies to help you find the change you're looking for. I enjoy working with a diverse and multicultural population of clientele. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Beginning therapy is a brave act of self-care, and working with an effective clinician can provide you the support you deserve in bringing about powerful changes in your life and relationships. I believe you have the skills and strengths necessary to overcome the obstacles you face and I cannot wait to join you on the journey. I am passionate about my work with adults navigating life transitions and exploring what they need to live as their most authentic selves. I specialize in burnout and the impact of past trauma on current relationships. I have experience working with survivors of sexual and family violence as well as those struggling with anxiety and attachment issues. I believe in culturally-competent and trauma-informed care and utilized an eclectic therapeutic approach with a focus on Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Relational Therapy. Fostering an inclusive and affirming environment for all of my clients, I work collaboratively with you to develop evidenced-based treatment plans that validate your lived experiences and encourages growth. Therapy can be daunting to start, but it can also be such a freeing experience. I will follow your lead as we will move through sessions together.
There are times when life brings us challenges and presents us with unexpected or difficult situations. We may not always feel in control over the events in our lives. My approach to counseling is non-judgmental, integrative, and collaborative. I work with you so that, together, we can meet your goals. Expressive Therapy is an important approach I use in therapy and it involves engaging in activities like drawing, storytelling, music, writing as part of the process towards a deeper understanding. It provides the means for us to explore and share authentically who we are, our pain, our joy, and to welcome the support of others on our journey.

Dr. Tara Cousineau is a licensed clinical psychologist with nearly 30 years of experience supporting high-achieving individuals who struggle with perfectionism, self-doubt, procrastination, imposter syndrome, and burnout. Her clients are often high achieving individuals who are outwardly successful but inwardly overwhelmed—neglecting their own well-being in the pursuit of achievement. She offers a warm, collaborative space to reconnect with what truly matters and build a life of greater ease and meaning. Dr. Tara’s approach is integrative and holistic, blending mindfulness, self-compassion, psychodynamic and narrative therapies, Internal Family Systems, and mind-body medicine. She believes every person possesses innate strengths that may be hidden by life’s pressures, losses, or traumas—and that therapy is a process of remembering wholeness, even when things feel messy or uncertain. In addition to private practice, Dr. Tara serves part-time as a staff psychologist at Harvard University’s Counseling and Mental Health Services (and as such cannot see currently registered Harvard students in her private practice due to conflict of interest). She maintains a small caseload of 8–10 clients at a time in order to provide personalized care. She especially enjoys working with clients who are motivated to grow between sessions and who seek to align their inner lives with their outer aspirations. Dr. Tara sees clients in person on Friday afternoons in Newton Highlands, MA, and offers telehealth appointments on Monday and Thursday afternoons. She has advanced training in Internal Family Systems, integrated care through the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine, and teaching certifications in Mindfulness Meditation and Mindful Self-Compassion. She is the author of "The Perfectionist’s Dilemma: Learn the Art of Self-Compassion and Become a Happy Achiever" and "The Kindness Cure: How the Science of Compassion Can Heal Your Heart and Your World," which reflect her deep commitment to compassionate, evidence-based care.
Welcome! I specialize in working with older adolescents, young adults, and parents, to help develop strategies to manage a variety of stressors including depression, anxiety, low self esteem, grief and loss, academic challenges, life transitions and relationship struggles. If you're navigating mental health challenges while trying to keep up with life, you're not alone. You might be exhausted from masking how you feel, wondering why it's so hard to focus, stay motivated, or feel truly connected to others. Maybe your mood feels unpredictable, or it's getting harder to show up for school, work, or relationships the way you want to. I work with people facing ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, psychosis, and substance use. These experiences can shape how you think, how you relate to others, and how you feel in your own body. Therapy offers a safe space to explore what's going on beneath the surface and figure out what helps. My approach is warm, supportive, and nonjudgmental. You don't have to have everything figured out. Whether you're overwhelmed by stress, feeling stuck in patterns that don't make sense, or just trying to get through the day, I'll meet you with curiosity and respect. Together, we can build understanding, practical tools, and a path forward that feels manageable and meaningful. Therapy works best as a collaborative process. Rather than telling you what to do, I'll work alongside you to explore your experiences, identify what's getting in the way, and find tools that actually fit your life. I move at a pace that feels right for you, honoring your strengths while making space for growth and change. I also provide psychiatric care and have worked in both inpatient psychiatry and outpatient addiction medicine. Motivational interviewing has been a key part of how I support people navigating substance use, especially when they feel ready for change. Helping people recover, in whatever form that takes, brings deep meaning to my work. Throughout my career, I've supported people from many walks of life, young adults, older adults, veterans, Native American communities, and LGBTQ+ individuals. I'm passionate about addressing the growing crisis of depression, anxiety, and isolation that affects so many people today. I am easygoing and conversational. I show up as a real person, not a distant expert. Connecting with people and supporting their recovery is a privilege that continues to shape my life in meaningful ways. You don't have to figure everything out on your own. When you're ready, support is here.

My clients often seek therapy when they are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or burnt out. They are amidst a transition — starting college, beginning or ending a relationship, changing jobs, or becoming a parent. Others are feeling stuck and need support navigating friendships, partnerships, family dynamics, and careers. I believe that effective therapy happens when the client and therapist have an authentic, trusting relationship, and the client is invested in their healing. Therapy is a dynamic conversation geared towards your needs-to be challenged, validated, empowered, or understood; every session is designed to meet you where you are both that day and in their overall therapeutic journey. I value the use of humor and authentic connection. I primarily utilize psychodynamic therapy, CBT, and attachment theory, all within a trauma informed lens. Current and past clients have highlighted that they valued my authenticity as a person and provider, that I created a non-judgmental, accepting, and empathetic space where they felt truly seen and cared for, and that our work together has been valuable and healing.
