Any of us, from adults to very young children, can experience life challenges that require the caring support of other people. Sometimes we need help to navigate these challenges, and to heal, reorient, and move forward in our lives toward better health and wholeness. When the emotional support of friends and family is not enough, establishing a safe, collaborative relationship with a psychotherapist can be a valuable resource. I enjoy working with students who are ready to access support and guidance in order to address the social-emotional or mental health challenges that are holding them back; the changes and healing they are seeking in their relationships with parents, other family members, friends and/or partners; and clarification of needs, wants and life goals.

Trauma recovery involves the process of healing both the body and mind from overwhelming experiences by reconnecting with oneself in an integrated way. It includes developing interoception—the ability to sense and interpret internal bodily cues—which helps individuals notice and respond to their emotional and physical states with greater awareness and regulation. Recovery also involves working with both implicit memories (unconscious, body-held responses like tension or startle reflexes) and explicit memories (conscious, narrative recollections of events). Through therapeutic approaches that access these memory systems, individuals begin to make sense of their experiences, reduce reactivity, and create new, safer associations, allowing for a more grounded and empowered sense of self.

I believe that counseling should focus on holistic wellness which incorporates physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, and environmental wellness. Counseling isn't about fixing, but growing. My goal is to create an environment that radiates warmth, comfort, and safety with the intention of facilitating growth and healing through support and empowerment. I am here to walk down the path toward healing with you as you explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences in a judgement-free environment. I specialize in working with complex trauma, specifically trauma stemming from intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and childhood abuse. I have a special interest in working with clients who identify as multicultural and/or LGBTQ+. I incorporate a compassion-focused approach with trauma-informed interventions to promote self-love and self-acceptance. I believe that each person holds within themselves the ability to heal. We have all experienced pain, grief and hardship, and we all have the capacity for great resiliency. You have gotten to where you are today because you have worked to be here. When humans are provided with support and connection, they can achieve growth and peace.

College can feel like a lot — like you’re trying to stay afloat in a fast-moving current. Some days you’re cruising; other days it’s all you can do to keep your head above water. Maybe you’re here because you’re tired of just getting by. Maybe you’re looking for a space to slow down, catch your breath, and figure out what’s next. I believe in meeting people exactly where they are - in the messy, real, complicated parts of being human. My approach is flexible and grounded in empathy, drawing from attachment work, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), parts work, and EMDR. All aimed at helping you feel more connected to yourself and others.

Aloha, my name is Mahina. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and sole practitioner / owner of Honu Healing LLC, offering individual psychotherapy to adults of all ages and walks of life. Many of the people wanting my support are feeling burdened by anxiety, sadness, or grief, overwhelmed by a variety of stressors, or simply worn down by internal and external elements. Sometimes these experiences lead to self-defeating/sabotaging thoughts and behaviors, feeling disconnected from oneself or others, or struggling with cycles of shame and self-doubt. While these challenges are deeply human, they often impact our relationships, sense of security and identity, ability to be our authentic selves, and our capacity to fully function. It is my heartfelt honor to support individuals through current or lifelong challenges. I specialize in helping adults navigate traumatic experiences, grief, transitions, spirituality, and stress related to school, work, or relationships. I am here to help and guide you with effective, lasting solutions to persistent struggles. My approach is tailored to your unique needs and goals. I utilize trauma-processing methods that engage somatic awareness, your intrinsic wisdom, and inner resources. We will explore habits that are not helpful in your relationships with yourself or others. I will help you reclaim your agency with empowering tools and knowledge and guide you toward applying this in your daily life in self-affirming, embodied ways. My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, engaging, gently challenging, and often playful. With reverence for your intrinsic dignity and wisdom, I trust your compassionate capacity to heal and connect with yourself and others. I partner with you using proven methods that go beyond traditional talk therapy and employ your inherent strengths and wisdom. It takes courage to entrust others to ally with you along your sacred journey. Life experiences, anxiety, loss, relationship challenges, and life transitions can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves and the lives we want. I believe that healing happens when people feel heard, understood, and empowered to reclaim authorship of their lives. I view counseling as a collaborative process that honors people's lived experiences and capacity for growth. I do my best to create an affirming and compassionate space where clients can explore their experiences, uncover strengths, make meaning of their stories, and take actions toward living lives that feel more authentic and aligned with their values. My counseling approach is integrative and informed by critical ecological perspectives, drawing from person-centered, narrative, cognitive behavioral, and existential therapies. I care deeply about fairness, justice, and understanding how the systems and environments around us shape mental health and well-being.

You have taken a big and brave first step into bettering yourself and addressing your mental well-being. I have worked with individuals from various different backgrounds and identities treating a wide array of mental conditions. In our collaborative work together, we will process and explore barriers that may be inhibiting you from your full human potential. Counseling can feel like a scary and overwhelming experience, but know that this is the first step to bettering yourself. Counseling can improve both your personal relationships with family and friends and give you a sense of fulfillment in your life. Together we can build a working relationship to discover ways to reduce your current condition while examining patterns that affect your interpersonal relationships based on cognitive processes. I practice from a psychodynamic framework, which is defined as exploring people's emotions, thoughts, motivations, and behaviors that are outside of our awareness. *Please note that I am only seeing students via Telehealth as my practice is now 100% remote.* My areas of interests and expertise include working with adults, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, work burnout, trauma, interpersonal relationships, men and masculinities, gender identity, new fatherhood, porn addiction, and self-compassion. I aim to create a safe space to process aspects that may seem like a hindrance to reaching your full potential.

I like to think of therapy as a journey of inner exploration and I am along as a guide. I believe that therapy is most effective when it is a combination of intellectual understanding and emotional experience. In that regard, it feels like your feelings are our road signs that we are in the right track to self-growth. I try to not have a specific agenda going into sessions, but rather to go where it is you feel like you need to go at that time. I believe that it is my role to create a safe space for you to express and explore whatever it is that is inside you. Compassion is key, and cultivating self-compassion is one of the most important elements of therapy. I look forward to helping you explore and become more self-aware and self-compassionate!

I work with individuals and relationships from a systemic, decolonial, and anti-oppressive lens. This means that when working with you, I will take into account all the micro and macro systems around you that are affecting you on your day to day, and making you feel like there is something wrong with you. I work with individuals who experience stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma due to problems with their family of origin, major life changes and transitions, relationship issues, work stressors, and the state of the world. I like to pay close attention to how our current social and political climate is also affecting you at a personal level and at a communal level. I do my best work with people who are ready to… - look closely at the stories they've been carrying and gently question which ones no longer serve them, - discover and honor their own needs—not just those of others, - sort through the values they've inherited from family, culture, or society to uncover the ones that truly belong to them, - align values, thoughts, and actions in ways that create deeper integrity and wholeness, and practice setting healthy boundaries and asking for their needs to be met with clarity and self-respect. I may not be the right fit for you if… - you are seeking couples therapy for infidelity or relational violence, - you are unwilling or not yet ready to look at your own patterns or make changes, - you want quick fixes without engaging in the deeper inner work, - or you are looking for therapy that does not center justice, culture, or liberation.

What do you do when what everyone calls "the best years of your life' just aren't?? The transition from home to college is an exciting one, but one that brings with it many new experiences...leaving home (sometimes for the first time), living more independently, meeting a whole world of new people, and learning more about yourself...your strengths and weaknesses. As a college student you often face adversities such as a lack of stability, increased social and pressures, and a strong push towards academic hyper-achievement. Together with familial and social (media) pressure college students often experience changes in sleep, eating and energy patterns, irritability, a loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed, and substance abuse. Knowing when you need support, and taking the initiative to actually get that help is an important first step in figuring things out. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, depression, homesickness, finding your people or just trying to figure yourself out I hope that I can help.
